Here’s how a heat pump typically works:
- Heat Absorption: In heating mode, a heat pump absorbs heat from a source, such as outdoor air, the ground, or water. This heat is collected using a heat exchanger.
- Heat Compression: The heat absorbed is then compressed using a compressor. Compression increases the temperature and pressure of the refrigerant gas.
- Heat Release: The high-temperature, high-pressure gas is then passed through another heat exchanger located indoors, where it releases heat into the space that needs to be heated.
- Refrigerant Expansion: After releasing heat indoors, the refrigerant is expanded through an expansion valve or capillary tube. This causes the refrigerant to cool down and become a low-pressure gas.
- Heat Absorption (Cooling Mode): In cooling mode, the heat pump can reverse the cycle. It absorbs heat from the indoor space and releases it outdoors, effectively cooling the indoor environment.
Heat pumps are highly efficient because they move heat rather than generate it through combustion, as in traditional furnaces or boilers. They are particularly advantageous in regions with moderate climates where heating and cooling are both needed throughout the year.
There are different types of heat pumps, including:
- Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP): These extract heat from the ambient air and are commonly used for residential heating and cooling.
- Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP or Geothermal Heat Pumps): These utilize the relatively constant temperature of the ground or groundwater as a heat source or sink. They are highly efficient but typically have higher installation costs.
- Water Source Heat Pumps (WSHP): These use water bodies such as lakes or rivers as a heat source or sink.
